The United Nations’ agency responsible for global migration, International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has demanded a “rapid expansion” of humanitarian aid to Cabo Delgado, a province in northern Mozambique.
The agency has also asked for more funding to the province of Cabo Delgado.
IOM Director, António Vitorino, who is on a visit to Mozambique, made the call, according to local media reports.
He precisely visited the district of Metuge, which reportedly hosts about 125,000 of the over 800,000 who have been displaced since the end of 2017.
He reportedly stated that the assistance was needed to support the hundreds of thousands displaced by insecurity in the area.
He was quoted as saying “Significant additional funding is needed to cover life-saving humanitarian needs and work towards lasting solutions, especially before the next rainy and cyclone season in December.”
According to the IOM, it had provided assistance to over 600,000 people in Cabo Delgado between January and July including through shelter construction or reconstruction support and providing household items.
But the Organisation has reportedly observed that its operations are underfunded and that it estimates it needs $58m (£42m) to support emergency and post-crisis efforts.
Insecurity has been in Cabo since 2017 with armed groups waging constant attack.
