Boycott Woman King Loses Against The Woman King
Boycott Woman King is the response activists can’t outweigh the majority after The Woman King movie slayed the Box Office with a $19m opening week. But Viola Davis could care less and so could we.
Sony projecting the movie to hit $12 million. Per a Deadline report, The Woman King debuted with $6.85M on Friday, including $1.7 million in Thursday previews. Audiences gave it a 95% positive on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak.
The Woman King directed Gina Prince-Bythewood, tells the true story of the all-female warrior unit known as the Agojie. The women protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th to 19th centuries. Actors and actresses in the movie include Viola Davis, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.
Although, The Woman King has seen success some stand against it.
The controversy comes with the way the story is told. Podcaster Antonio Moore who called the historical epic “the most offensive film to Black Americans in 40-50 years.”
But the majority respond otherwise. One person tweeted, now that it’s out, I can say this: The people telling you to boycott The Woman King, for the reasons they’re stating, sound crazy because the film literally deals with the reasons they’re stating.
Another person said, The Woman King is currently number one at the box office, & on track for a massive opening weekend, surpassing expectations. More proof that there’s a real world outside of the social media echo chamber. And I’m pleased that all the fake outrage & calls for a boycott failed.
Viola Davis also spoke out to not speak out on the boycott Woman King controversy.
“I agree with [director] Gina Prince-Bythewood’s saying is you’re not going to win an argument on Twitter,” Davis said. “We entered the story where the kingdom was in flux, at a crossroads. They were looking to find some way to keep their civilization and kingdom alive. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that they were decimated. Most of the story is fictionalized. It has to be.”
Furthermore, Davis stated the purpose of The Woman King focuses on women forced into deathly battles. Additionally stating people who don’t support the movie support the idea that Black women cannot lead a box office globally.
