QUEENS VILLAGE, New York (WABC) — There are delays and cancellations on the LIRR Thursday afternoon after a disabled work train derailed.
The length of the cleanup is unknown, but will likely impact the afternoon commute as only two of the four tracks will be available.
The train derailed between Queens Village and the Elmont-UBS Arena stations. The 16-car train was coming out of a yard when it derailed just after 10 a.m.
Seven percent of normal LIRR eastbound service (11 of the 159 trains) will be canceled Thursday afternoon and the eastbound service that is operating will run with 15 to 20 minute delays.
Westbound service will be significantly curtailed Thursday afternoon. There will be hourly service only (one train an hour) on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, Hempstead and Oyster Bay branches.
There is an Eagles concert at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night and anyone coming from Long Island on those four branches will only have hourly service.
The MTA said customers should use the Babylon, Montauk, or Port Washington branches.
Two of the 16 cars of the work train left the tracks. No passengers were on board and no injuries were reported.
The LIRR hopes to restore normal service for the morning commute.
