The family of Aaliyah Ivory is speaking out. The 24-year-old from Park Forest, was on her way to Chicago to hang out with friends just before 2 p.m. on Saturday. Family said she was trying to merge onto I-57 northbound from Lincoln Highway near Matteson.
“He wouldn’t let her over so he tried to push her off the side of the road,” family said. “She cut him back off, he pulled up on the side of her, called her a racist name. She called him a name back — he got behind her, next thing you know bullets started to shoot.”
Luckily the mother was able to pull over on the expressway. A nearby driver caught some of the incident on camera.
As officials pulled up they arrested the man, but he was later released without charges.
Both Aaliyah Ivory and the shooter obtained a conceal to carry.
According to the detective told them the man expressed that he feared for his life.
Nevertheless, Ivory’s sister, Kimberly, she believes she ever touched her weapon. Leaving wonder to why the man felt threatened.
“Her weapon was not drawn, was not shot either,” Kimberly Ivory said. “It was in a holster on safety.”
As fire went out Aaliyah attempted to block the bullets. According to her mother, “One surgery she has to have is in her hand because she threw her hand up to block the bullet,” her sister said. “It shattered like 30 bones in her hand.”
Early that morning Aaliyah had just posted an inspirational post. Saying, I love how everything is turning out for me everything fashow. After the shooting she shared photos in the hospital. As well as noting her pain and disbelief.
A sister, and daughter, as well as a mother, Kimberly, also noted the bullets hit her vehicle in the location her daughter normally sits. The family also noted the man yelled racial slurs.
Officers say the investigation continues at thit time.
