Former Ghana Black Stars defender, Jonathan Mensah, has shared what appears to be the first of many stories about ex-Sunderland star, Asamoah Gyan, that he intends to make public.
In a birthday message to Gyan on November 22, 2021, Jonathan Mensah revealed how he had known the former Black Stars captain for more than a decade.
In his post on Facebook sighted by African Entertainment, Mensah described Gyan as a legend, saying “Happy birthday Legend Asamoah Gyan . I’ve known you for more than a decade, I can share many stories.”
He wrote: “I remember you were very ill hours before our last group game against Algeria in Eq. Guinea, Mongomo to be precise. You went on to play 90+ minutes and scored the lone goal. That’s some legendary stuff, you are one of the greats to ever do it, we celebrate you today. ”.

Gyan was born November 22, 1985 (age 36 years) in Accra, Ghana.
Ghana and Algeria progressed from their group to the quarterfinals of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea. They were in “the group of death” for that year’s AFCON.” They were in group with South Africa and Senegal.
Ghana advanced to the final of that year’s AFCON after beating host Equatorial Guinea 3-0 in the semifinals that ended in violence, with Equatorial Guinean supporters pelting Ghanaian players with objects.
The Black Stars were however unfortunate as they lost out to Cote d’Ivoire on penalty shootouts in the final for that year.
Both Gyan and Mensah played for the Black Stars for several years.
Gyan – who started his football career with Liberty Professionals – captained the Black Stars when Stephen Appiah left the national team as captain.
Gyan ended his career as a footballer with Accra-based club, Legon Cities, having joined them for the 2020 – 2021 season.
At the club level, Gyan had spells with Udinese, Modena, Rennes, Sunderland, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Al Ahli Dubai, Kayserispor and NorthEast United.
Mensah – who currently plays for Columbus Crew in the US – played for the Ghana Black Stars alongside Gyan in two FIFA World Cups as well as AFCON.
