Marsai Martin on Rising Above Social Media Trolls, Her Dream Car and Dream Collaboration

“Little” star Marsai Martin‘s latest project is one the whole family will be sure to enjoy.  While discussing her role as Liberty in the upcoming animated film “Paw Patrol: The Movie,” with Atlanta Black Star, the 16-year Hollywood actress discussed her burgeoning career and who she’d like to work with in the near future—the actress may surprise fans.

Martin also revisited a huge promise her “Black-ish” co-star made her regarding a rather lavish automobile and detailed what it’s like growing up not only as a star but a teenager in the age of social media.

In the movie [Paw Patrol: The Movie], your character Liberty got a new ride. Is your dream car still the purple matte Tesla, and did Anthony [Anderson] buy it for you?

Ok!  I haven’t gotten my car yet. Let’s just start there, but I also haven’t gotten my license yet. I know how to drive. I know everything that I gotta do. I’ve been behind the wheel. I just do not have my driver’s license yet. There’s been a lot going on right now, I’ve been super busy, so it’s been kind of tough. I know what I gotta do. I just gotta have my license and just visualize. I think that too; I’ve been experienced with cars as well. I said I wanted a Tesla, like, a couple of years back, so, now that I’ve been behind the wheel, I kinda know what I want now and what I’m looking for actually in a car and not just the exterior.

I have a lot of favorite cars right now. I actually like a good E-Class Mercedes-Benz. My whole family is super into Benz. We have different trucks and all that. We’re just Benz everywhere, so I’m more familiar with that car, so I would definitely say it’s kind up there more than a Tesla right now, but if Anthony pulls up with a Tesla, we’ll see.

Who is your dream celebrity to work with?

I think now, with working with so many different people who portray their craft like really differently. There’s so many people that do different things when it comes to acting. I’m just kinda interested in just who else I could work with just to see their work and their art in real life. Like, I don’t know if I have a certain person. If I had to choose, I’d say I’d love to work with Regina King but as a director. Like, I know she’s directing now. depending if I’m creating whatever she’s directing or she’s on “black-ish” one day, we’ll see, but that’s definitely one person that I’m interested in working with.

How do you take the stuff from social media and rise above it?

I could care less about social media, honestly. Legit. Social media it’s like a blessing and a curse at the same time. It’s easy to get sucked into something like that and especially with people my age. A lot of people like to show different things when it comes to my age, you know what I’m saying. At the space that I am in, it’s easy to get sucked into different things because people want you to do different things now that you’re an age or they’re expecting you to go this route or whatever.

I mean, it’s insane. So just trying my hardest just to step back from a bit little see what it is. At the end of the day, it’s a business, you know. Social media, regardless of what you think, it is a business, it is a brand, and that’s the thing that moves us forward. Like, believe it or not, that’s what’s going to move me forward. It’s insane, but it’s true. I could care less about social media at the moment and showing a different side of myself or a different aesthetic or whatever, but it’s just another movement to your craft for me, honestly. That’s where I show my work, my business. That’s what I do on there.

Paramount Picture’s “Paw Patrol:  The Movie,” starring Martin, Kim Kardashian, and Yara Shahidi, Tyler Perry, and more hits in theaters and on Paramount+ on August 20, 2021.
