People doubted my ability to lead as a woman

    Samia Suluhu Hassan

The President of Tanzania,  Samia Suluhu Hassan, has revealed that there were points in time when certain people doubted her ability to lead as a woman when she initially became President.

Ms Hassan, aged 61, took over Tanzania in March 2021, following the death of then President John Magufuli.

    ‘We’re here to show them’

Speaking in an interview with BBC monitored by African Entertainment,  she indicated that some people  “don’t believe that women can be better presidents and we are here to show them.”

Ms Hassan is at the moment the only female head of State.

She explained that “Even some of my government workers dismissed me at first as just another woman, but they soon accepted my leadership.”

She said “But this is not just in Africa, even in America, [Hillary] Clinton reached a place where we thought she was going to be the president but she couldn’t.”
