President Buhari calls for unity after gunmen killed 41 people

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has called for unity after massacres in the country.

Violence in Jos, the capital of Nigeria’s Plateau State,  reportedly led to the massacres of dozens of people.

According to local media reports monitored by African Entertainment, recent attacks in Jos are the work of criminals rather than religious violence.

Jos has in the past reportedly suffered from clashes between Muslim and Christian communities.

Reports say some 23 Muslim travellers were killed earlier in August 2021 when their bus convoy was attacked outside Jos.

Additionally, gunmen allegedly descended on a predominantly Christian village on the outskirts of Jos, shooting dead at least 18 people and setting homes on fire.

According to reports, Police had initially blamed a suspected Christian militia.

A statement from the office of President Buhari on Sunday read: “The Presidency wishes to assure all citizens that as a government, the administration is on top of events and is moving ahead with force to crush the perpetrators.”

The statement added that “But to achieve success, our communities must unite against these horrific attacks. Retributive violence is not the answer.”
