    The challenge may be the grossest thing known. Especially, during a time that many work hard to recover from the Rona.

    Parents gifted their 8-year-old daughter Lailani a phone in April of 2021 for her birthday.

    Like many young children her age she enjoyed using the app. As well as gained hope for going viral.

    “She was also under the belief that if she posted a video of herself doing the Blackout Challenge, then she would become famous and so she decided to give it a try,” According to the Tiktok blackout challenge lawsuit. “Lalani was eight years old at the time and did not appreciate or understand the dangerous nature of what TikTok was encouraging her to do.”

    Parents also granted their 7-year-old daughter Arriani Jaileen Arroyo of Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a phone for her birthday. She became a fan of the app as well.

    She assured her parents she would not participate in any dangerous activities. But soon fell into the desire of becoming viral from the challenge. She died at age nine.

    In December 2021, another young girl died while allegedly attempting the Blackout ChallengeTawainna Anderson found her 10-year-old daughter Nylah Anderson unconscious and hanging in her bedroom closet by her neck. She hung from a purse strap. Once, rushed to the hospital she stayed in intensive care. But died several days later.

    Lawsuit

    “TikTok unquestionably knew that the deadly Blackout Challenge was spreading through their app and that their algorithm was specifically feeding the Blackout Challenge to children, including those who have died,” the complaint reads.

    The challenge remains one of many challenges TikTok allowed to get in front of audiences too young to view.

    Written in the most recent lawsuit filed in Los Angelas, the app intentionally pushed the challenge. Leading to the death of the two young girls.

    TikTok needs to be held accountable for pushing deadly content to these two young girls,” said Matthew Bergman. Bergman works as an attorney at the Social Media Victims Law Center, which filed the suit.

    Additionally, he mentioned that TikTok invested billions of dollars to intentionally design products that push dangerous content. He also stated that the company knows the dangers can result in the deaths of its users.

    The suit calls for a judge to order TikTok to stop hooking children via its algorithm and promoting dangerous challenges, and to pay unspecified cash damages.

    The company now posts warnings for some dangerous challenges reported.
