Will Smith And Jada Talk About Willow’s Depression At 10 Years Old
Will Smith took the weekend to talk about Willow’s depression at 10 years old. The “Whip my Hair” artist hit a point in her life where she felt like no one really cared, and made a possible attempt to protest against her father Will Smith.
The couple aired out the issue on Jada’s “Red Table Talk”. Will Smith opened up about Willows career and how after performing on a few dates of the tour , 10 year old Willow was ready to quit and go home. Nevertheless, he encouraged her to continue her tour commitment.
“She kept asking,” Will told Jada on Red Table Talk. “She was like, ‘Daddy, it doesn’t matter how I feel?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, baby, it does matter how you feel, but you have to finish what you started.’ And she was like, ‘But I’m finished.'”
He went on to say that he felt Willow completely shaving her head the following year was “a protest against him”.
Willow had also previously spoke about her rise to fame and the way her parents handled it. She talked about having to forgive her parents.
“It was mostly daddy because he was so harsh at certain times,” she said. “It was like, a couple of years trying to regain trust for not feeling like I was listened to, or no one cared what I felt during that time.”
She went on: “I felt guilty because I was like, ‘Everyone is trying to make me better, trying to make my dream.’ But I didn’t really understand what my dream entailed.”
Will Smith admitted he didn’t handle the situation well saying, “My desire for her was overriding her desire for her. I had a real epiphany on that and how bad a person will hate you if you keep forcing your wishes onto their life.”
Like any parent Will Smith may have been trying to do what was best for Willow, but was doing what was best for him, unintentionally.
