8 year old Farouk James of the UK was denied from several schools because of his long hair. Farouks’ mother, Bonnie James has been searching for a school for her son for months. According to, YEN.com.gh gathers that one of those schools is The London Oratory School, the same school her 23-year-old first son attended.
As time passed, and acceptance had apparently evolved, Bonnie thought the strict guidelines of the school might have changed but she found out they didn’t and Farouk’s long hair violated the school’s policy, too.
Farouk’s father is Ghanian, according their religious beliefs James was not able to receive his first hair cut until he was 3 years old. By this time he became attached to his locks.
Bonnie Miller told news staff, “At that point he was attached, and so be honest, with his beautiful hair we just kept the hair,”.
She allowed her son to continue to grow his hair, not thinking much about it until it came to applying for secondary schools.
James mother has attempted two schools so far, and states that most of the schools denying her son entry because of his hair are of Christian faith.
Miller said she thought about sending Farouk James to COED schools, but realized they have strict hair policies as well.
Her current setbacks had her talk about greater issues regarding stereotyping non-gender, gender-neutral and trans people.
Farouk’s mother doesn’t feel as though the schools should determine what is masculine or not. She even goes as far to say, she is willing to ”register James ”as nonbinary, and see what the school has to say then.”
Miller wonders if the school policies will force students to cut their hair a certain way, based on the school’s policies for sex they were assigned at birth.
