An investigation is underway after two zookeepers were injured in an attack by wolves inside an enclosure on Wednesday morning.
The attack required firefighters to rescue one of the zookeepers, who were attending to a wolf who had died overnight when the incident occurred.
According to officials at the Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City, a wolf had died of natural causes in the enclosure overnight between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and workers had entered the enclosure following that death.
It was at that point that both zookeepers were attacked by wolves, authorities said.
One of the zookeepers had suffered several bite wounds to her neck and to her limbs, and was able to escape the enclosure, officials said.
The other zookeeper was able to get onto the roof of a building within the enclosure, but firefighters had to lower a ladder into the area in order for that worker to escape. The worker suffered bite marks on their limbs, according to authorities.
Both zookeepers were transported to area hospitals, where their conditions have stabilized, according to officials.
The incident remains under investigation, and while the zoo was open for business on Wednesday, the wolf exhibit was closed to the public.
