EAST ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) — A brief police chase ended in a fiery crash in East Orange early Tuesday morning.
It happened shortly before 6 a.m. at Springdale and Midland Avenues.
Video from NewsCopter 7 over the scene showed a police SUV and a gray 2011 BMW sedan which had collided in the intersection.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. Smoke was pouring from the engine of BMW. Firefighters were on the scene working to control the situation.
A police officer was treated at the scene before being taken away in an ambulance.
There was no immediate word on the extent of the officer’s injury.
Three suspects in the vehicle fled the crash scene on foot. No arrests were immediately made.
It is not clear why the BMW was being pursued.
Police chases have become increasingly common across Essex County amid a surge in luxury car thefts.
