ATLANTA — An investigation is underway after an armed man allegedly pointed a gun at officers — prompting them to shoot back at him in Smyrna Friday afternoon. Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are looking into what happened.
Authorities said it happened in the area of Benson Poole Road and Crimson Maple Way. The location is near Woodland Falls by Arium Apartments and not far from the Family Dollar along South Cobb Drive.
The Smyrna Police Department said their officers, along with Cobb Police, responded around 4:37 p.m. after dispatch received multiple calls about an armed man.
“Our officers arrived on scene and made contact with the armed suspect. Officers were confronted by the armed man who pointed a firearm at them and was not compliant with verbal commands causing our officers to fire weapons,” Smyrna Police said in a release.
The Smyrna Police Department said the man was taken to the hospital. At this time, the extent of the man’s injuries is unclear. Officers were not hurt during the incident, Smyrna Police said.
A woman at the scene, who did not want to be identified, said she made eye contact with the armed man– while she was in her car and he pointed the gun at her. She added the man was also waving the gun around at other people as well.
“Some gunshots were heard,” she said. “It was… scary.”
No other details were released by authorities. The GBI said it will continue to update us as we learn more.
