A small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in northern Illinois just east of Rockford on Saturday afternoon, the National Transportation Safety Board said.
A Whittman Tailwind airplane crashed into a neighborhood near Poplar Grove under “unknown circumstances,” NTSB said around 6 p.m. Boone County officials said they got the call about a plane crash around 4 p.m.
One person was on board, and their condition remains unknown as of 9:30 p.m., authorities said.
“Out of an abundance of caution, nearby residents were temporarily evacuated due to the active gas leak,” a representative of the Boone County Fire Protection District said. “The scene remains active and we ask the public to please avoid the area so our emergency crews can operate safely and efficiently.”
Debris from the crash was scattered around the area, video showed. The plane landed between two houses, partially crushing a fence. One home was damaged, authorities said.
NTSB investigators were responding to the crash, the agency said in a post on social media.
“Once on site, investigators will document the scene and examine the aircraft. The plane will then be recovered to a secure facility for further evaluation,” NTSB said.
