Figure skating’s first individual medals have been handed out, and even though figure skating sensation Illia Malinin’s journey at the Games ended with a devastating finish, figure skating at the Milan Cortina Olympics is far from over.
The pairs short program takes place on Sunday afternoon, followed by the pairs free skate on Monday.
One of the most anticipated events, the women’s singles short program featuring an incredibly strong Team USA lineup, isn’t far after.
Alysa Liu, Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito, who call themselves the “Blade Angels” – a mashup of “Blades of Glory” and “Charlie’s Angels” – will all be vying for their shots at a medal.
Here are details on each athlete, information on the competition and the full figure skating schedule.
Alysa Liu
Liu will be trying to help the U.S. win its first women’s medal since Sasha Cohen in Turin in 2006, and perhaps the first gold medal since Sarah Hughes triumphed four years earlier at the Salt Lake City Games.
Liu was picked for her second Olympic team after briefly retiring following the Beijing Games. She had been burned out by years of practice and competing, but stepping away seemed to rejuvenate the 20-year-old from Clovis, California, and she returned to win the first world title by an American since Kimmie Meissner stood atop the podium two decades ago.
Liu’s biggest competitor may be her own teammate, glenn.
Amber Glenn
Glenn, a first-time Olympian who been nearly unbeatable the past two years, won Olympic gold as part of the team event.
But she has faced some hurdles at the Games unrelated to her performance.
Glenn received backlash over comments on politics and the LGBTQ+ community and dealt with copyright issues over a song she has used in her free skate the past two years. The copyright issues have since been resolved.
After making the TV rounds with several teammates on Monday to celebrate their gold medals, she planned to head to a training camp outside of Milan to prepare for the women’s individual competition.
“For all of us first-time Olympians, you saw our nerves, and (it was good) just getting them out,” Glenn said following the team event. “So I’m really grateful that I was able to have this opportunity ahead of the individual.”
Isabeau Levito
Isabeau Levito, 18, is a former world silver medalist.
“This was my goal and my dream and it just feels so special that it came true,” said Levito, whose mother is originally from Milan.
According to Olympics.com, Levito made her debut internationally in 2021-2022 as the U.S. national junior champion then competed at her first U.S. nationals as a senior, where she clinched bronze.
She clinched the title in her first appearance at the World Junior Championships in 2022 and later became a world silver medalist in 2024.
Women’s Singles – Short Program and Free Skate
The figure skating competition concludes with the women’s singles event, with the short program starting at 11:45 a.m. CT Tuesday and the free skate at 12 p.m. CT Thursday.
