Bruce Springsteen surprised fans Tuesday when he announced that he’ll be embarking on ambitious U.S. tour this spring, including a stop in Chicago.
The “Land of Hopes and Dreams Tour” will get underway in March, and will roll through numerous large cities including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago during the spring.
Springsteen, who has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump’s administration and of immigration enforcement actions, said that the tour is meant to inspire hope around the U.S.
“We are living through dark, disturbing and dangerous times, but do not despair. The calvary is coming,” he said in a social media video.
Notably, the tour begins in Minneapolis, which has been targeted by Operation Metro Surge and has seen thousands of arrests, along with the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
Springsteen released a song called “Streets of Minneapolis” protesting the government’s actions in the Twin Cities, and he said that the tour is being undertaken in defiance of Trump’s actions in office.
“We will be rocking your town in celebration and in defense of America, American democracy, American freedom, our American Constitution and our sacred American dream, all of which are under attack by our wannabe king and his rogue government in Washington, D.C.,” he said.
The tour will then travel to Portland and Los Angeles, both of which have been extensively targeted by immigration enforcement actions. It will conclude in Washington, D.C., where Trump federalized the National Guard in a controversial move last year.
Springsteen and the E-Street Band will make a stop at Chicago’s United Center on April 29, according to his website.
