The Chicago area is going to get quite a taste of winter this week, with multiple chances for snow and some frigid wind chills in coming days.
Those chances for snow have already begun, with the Chicago area seeing scattered snow showers on Sunday morning and parts of northwest Indiana already seeing lake-effect snow as winds blow southeast over Lake Michigan, according to forecast models.
Accumulations likely won’t amount to much on Sunday in the Chicago area, but parts of northwest Indiana could continue to see off-and-on snow in a trend that will remain in place through Monday.
Once the snow wraps up in Illinois, things are expected to remain mostly cloudy, with high temperatures only rising into the upper-20s. Breezy conditions will lead to wind chills in the teens, and that will remain the pattern into Monday as well, according to forecast models.
Chicago-area residents will wake up to temperatures in the upper-teens on Monday morning, and wind chills will be downright frigid, plunging into the single-digits as residents head to work.
What’s more, residents in northwest Indiana will continue to see lake-effect snow on Monday morning, which could snarl commutes and make for hazardous driving conditions in counties near Lake Michigan.
High temperatures aren’t expected to be much warmer on Monday, with readings in the upper-20s and low-30s.
Tuesday could see another chance of mixed precipitation due to a clipper system, which will move through as temperatures rise back into the low-40s across the area, according to forecast models.
Thursday is the next chance for significant snow in the area, especially in the city and the northern suburbs as a low-pressure system dives across the upper Midwest.
Several inches of snow could fall, though forecast models will change in coming days as the path of the storm will evolve. The upper Midwest is expected to be on the cold side of the front as it moves through, but if it moves north then the city of Chicago could see less snow or even rain depending on temperatures.
Following that storm, highs are expected to rise back into the 40s on Friday and Saturday, according to forecast models.
