Drivers who live in north suburban Skokie – or drive through the suburb – may want to ease off the gas.
As of Sunday, the speed limit on most residential streets has dropped to 25 miles per hour as part of a push to improve safety. According to a post on the village’s website, lowering the posted limit “will help align the signage with driver behavior while encouraging greater consistency and predictability on the road.”
The reduced limit applies to the majority of residential streets but excludes state or county-owned roadways, streets with an existing speed limit of 20 mph and select streets with “unique traffic considerations.”
The village previously said 30 mph speed limit signs on residential streets would be replaced with 25 mph speed limit signs – and additional ones would be added where necessary.
According to the village website, the change is meant to increase awareness, promote safer speeds and improve pedestrian safety.
