A Texas couple has gone viral on social media after getting engaged at a rather unexpected place in Chicago – at the Chili’s restaurant inside O’Hare International Airport.
But why did they choose Chili’s? And why get engaged at an airport?
Robert Schnetz and Sarah Doss met in 2023 by chance.
Both on layovers – and both sitting at the Chili’s bar.
Doss struck up a quick conversation – then they went to their separate planes.
“I gave her my LinkedIn, and then I land, and I have a message with her phone number,” Schnetz said.
Schnetz returned the message – and after nearly three years of dating – he knew he had to propose at the spot where it all started.
To get Doss back to O’Hare – he lied about a weekend work trip in Chicago, asking her to tag along.
“My friends had flown in that morning from LA, set everything up,” Schnetz explained. ” We start heading over and I see on the screens our slideshow is playing. I thought oh no she’s gonna know before we get there.”
Thankfully, she didn’t see it.
“I saw a crowd and I heard live music, live music, of course. There is there must be some event happening…” Doss said.
The event? Her own engagement.
Dozens of people watched – and recorded the proposal on their phones.
“It wasn’t until he started speaking really sincerely… then I realized everyone is looking at us,” Doss said. “I knew in that moment he is proposing. This is where we met. It couldn’t be more special. I was so surprised.”
Now the videos are popping up on Instagram and TikTok – and gaining a whole lot of views.
“I look over, 50 people recording,” Schnetz said. “I look to the left, everyone in Chili’s has their phones out.”
Sharing their love story with the world only makes their proposal that much sweeter, the couple said.
“We laugh all the time,” Doss said. “We enjoy our life together. So to be able to share that joy with other people is a really special thing.”
