
Chicago police were investigating after a student was shot and killed outside a school in the South Shore neighborhood on Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Kenyae Franklin, 16, was shot in front of Safe Achieve Academy of Chicago, 7877 S. Coles Ave., at around 9:13 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Chicago police said Kenyae was walking northbound on Coles Avenue when a white vehicle with three to four men inside approached, and one of them opened fire.
Kenyae was shot multiple times and taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Safe Achieve Academy of Chicago released the following statement regarding the shooting:
“This morning, a student was struck by gunfire outside of school and despite emergency medical efforts has passed away. We are a close-knit school community, and this loss is deeply felt by all.
School team members immediately initiated lockdown procedures to protect students and staff. Local authorities responded quickly, and their investigation is ongoing. Our first priority, every day, is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of our student during this very difficult time.”
No arrests had been made as of Tuesday evening.
