Tax season isn’t over yet, but the deadline is fast approaching.
If you haven’t filed your taxes, there’s still some time left – just not much.
Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15 to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any taxes owed, according to the Internal Revenue Service. April 15 is also the deadline for Illinois state individual income taxes, though deadlines may differ in other states.
According to the IRS, most taxpayers qualify to file electronically at no cost.

For those seeking an extension, you don’t need to file a separate one for state taxes. The Illinois Department of Revenue says it automatically grants a six-month extension. For those who request an extension, the new filing deadline is Oct. 15.
According to the IDOR, taxpayers granted an extension beyond the typical six months are automatically allowed that extension for state taxes.
