New details are emerging after an 18-year-old Bensenville man was shot and killed by a former middle school classmate Sunday in suburban Stone Park.
The incident unfolded about 9:26 p.m. in the 3200 block of North Avenue, police said, with officers from Stone Park responding to a call of shots fired.
Upon arrival, an 18-year-old, later identified as Daniel Mendez, of Bensenville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Tuesday, two suspects were taken into custody, with one being released.
Wednesday, Stone Park police announced 18-year-old Anthony Resendiz-Sanchez, also 18, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing of Mendez.
During a detention hearing Wednesday, prosecutors said Mendez, Resendiz-Sanchez who were acquaintances and had numerous friends in common, had agreed to meet for a marijuana deal taking place Sunday.
According to a court proffer, Resendiz-Sanchez, who was selling the marijuana, sent a friend to meet Mendez for the transaction instead.
When Mendez and witnesses met the friend during the transaction, the friend accused Mendez of stealing from him, the proffer says, and a fight captured by surveillance video ensued.
After the fight, prosecutors said Resendiz-Sanchez called Mendez about the incident, and that Mendez denied that he robbed anyone.
Resendiz-Sanchez used Snapchat to track Mendez’ location and confronted him, prosecutors said. According to court documents, Resendiz-Sanchez, wearing a mask and gloves, pulled up next to Mendez and pointed a gun towards him.
As Mendez tried to drive away, Resendiz-Sanchez rammed his car from behind multiple times. After getting out of their cars, the two had a physical confrontation, prosecutors said, with Resendiz-Sanchez shooting Mendez twice in the chest.
The next day, officials say Resendiz-Sanchez turned himself in.
Resendiz-Sanchez is scheduled to make his next court appearance on May 1.
