An individual who allegedly participated in an armed robbery with an armed suspect accused of gunning down a Chicago police officer has been arrested.
Sources told NBC Chicago the individual, who is believed to have assisted Alphanso Talley with an armed robbery at a dollar store on Saturday morning, was taken into custody shortly after prosecutors released court documents detailing how the crimes unfolded.
Police sources have identified the second individual as an 18-year-old Chicago resident, with a Chicago police spokesperson confirming a person-of-interest was in custody. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, and unlawful restraint, according to sources.
He has not yet been formally charged, according to police.
He had recently been paroled from prison on separate robbery charges, sources said.
According to authorities, the robbery occurred early Saturday morning at a Family Dollar store in the 3200 block of West Lawrence.
It is alleged Talley and the other individual entered the store shortly after it opened at 8 a.m., and the clerk asked Talley to put down a backpack that he had brought inside, in accordance with store police.
It was at that time Talley is alleged to have pulled out a weapon and pointed it at the clerk, striking her in the face with the gun.
Police allege the other individual then attempted to open a time-delayed safe and the cash register during the attempted robbery, but was unable to do so.
It is alleged that individual and Talley then rifled through the clerk’s purse and stole her car keys and her wallet. The woman then was forced at gunpoint to open the cash register, and the two fled the store with more than $100 in cash.
While the suspect made his first court appearance Monday, he’s set to appear in court again Tuesday on charges relating to an armed robbery.
That cash happened to have a GPS tracker in it, and police used it to find Talley, who had fled with the other individual on a Lime scooter, prosecutors alleged.
That second person had eluded capture, but police were able to take Talley into custody. He allegedly was concealing a weapon on his person, and when he was hospitalized after telling police he had ingested drugs, he pulled out the gun and fired multiple shots, killing 38-year-old John Bartholomew and critically wounding a 57-year-old officer.
Talley now faces first-degree murder charges amongst a host of other charges, and his accomplice is expected to be charged in connection with the armed robbery at the dollar store.
