More than 780,000 bottles of a popular nasal spray are being recalled, with officials saying the products could result in “serious injury or illness from child poisoning” because of packaging defects.
The recall, issued Thursday by pharmaceutical company Beyer, applies to hundreds of thousands of bottles of travel-sized Afrin Original Nasal Spray. According to officials, the bottles should be in child-resistant packaging because they contain imidazoline, but they are not.
Since the packaging is not child-resistant and does not have the required labeling by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, the product poses a “risk of serious injury or illness from poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children,” officials said.
Bayer said the label on the back of the bottles does say “Keep out of the reach of children.” However, it lacks the required label on the front that should either say “This package for households without young children,” or “Package not child-resistant.”
The 1/5 fluid ounce, travel-sized bottles were sold nationwide at convenience stores and travel hubs like airports and bodegas between Sept. 2024 and April 2026, Bayer said. They were not sold at major retailers like Walmart, Target or Amazon.
Only Lot numbers 230361; 240822; 241198; 250066, 250152; 250646, and 250831 were impacted.
In total, about 786,100 bottles were recalled, the CPSC said.
“Consumers should immediately store the recalled unexpired bottles in a safe location, out of sight and reach of children,” the recall said. Customers who have the bottles in their medicine cabinets are encouraged to go to the recall website to request a refund.
