
A University of Illinois Chicago student and women’s track and field athlete was among three people killed in crash involving a wrong-way driver along Interstate 88 in Kane County.
Sariyah Watson, who is from DeKalb, died following the collision on Sunday in the westbound lanes of I-88 near milepost 112.25, according to Illinois State Police. Police said a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes struck another car. Three people sustained life-threatening injuries and were later pronounced dead.
Additional details about the collision or the other victims weren’t immediately available.
Watson was a junior sprinter on UIC’s track and field team.
“Our hearts are broken by this tragic loss,” UIC Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Andrea Williams said in a statement. “On behalf of UIC, we extend our deepest condolences to Sariyah’s family, friends, teammates and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
UIC Athletics said it is providing support for student-athletes, coaches and staff affected by the tragedy.
