The Chicago area is set to see a dramatic warm-up in coming days, and with that will come multiple chances of strong-to-severe thunderstorms.
According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the main chances for thunderstorms will likely arrive on Saturday morning and then again Monday afternoon, with chances of severe weather on both days.
There is a quick round of showers and thunderstorms that could sweep through the area in the overnight hours Friday morning, but most of the bad weather should clear out of the area by the time the morning commute rolls around, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
High temperatures are expected to be largely pleasant Friday, rising into the 70s across the area as winds shift out of the south, forecast models suggest.
The first chance of severe weather in the area could arrive early Saturday morning, with the Storm Prediction Center putting the entire Chicago area at a “marginal” risk of severe weather.
The main threats with any thunderstorms that develop would be gusty winds and some large hail, especially in areas along and north of Interstate 80.
After a day of high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s, a second round of showers and thunderstorms could sweep through on Saturday evening, primarily impacting parts of the southern suburbs, according to forecast models.
Sunday could see some lingering showers and storms early, but for the most part things are expected to be clear, with temperatures again soaring into the mid-to-upper 80s across the area as the region gets a big dose of summer-like weather.
Those temperatures will stick around again on Monday, and the Storm Prediction Center believes the Chicago area will again be at risk of severe weather, with all hazards currently on the table. What’s uncertain is the arrival time of that weather, though the system could push into the region on Monday afternoon and into the evening hours.
Tuesday could see one more round of showers and storms, then temperatures are expected to cool down a bit, dropping back into the 70s by the middle of next week.
