Gunfire was exchanged in an Aurora parking lot Friday morning, leaving two men shot and prompting a hold-in-place status at several schools and restrictions in the area as police investigated with K9 and drone teams.
Around 9:33 a.m., police officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire on the 2000 block of West Downer Place in Aurora. Authorities said initial information suggested gunfire was exchanged between people “associated with at least two vehicles” in a parking lot on the block.
Police later found a 25-year-old man near the intersection of Downer Place and Edgelawn Drive who had been shot, authorities said. Officers immediately rendered aid until paramedics arrived on scene to transport the man to a local hospital. He later left on his own, authorities said.
A second man who had been shot self-transported to a local hospital, police said. He was treated and released.
Several vehicles in the parking lot were struck by gunfire, police said.
Aurora police searched the area for suspects and evidence using K9 teams, drones and outside assisting agencies. During the search and investigation, authorities urged nearby residents to avoid the area and temporary restrictions were put in place for roughly 2 hours.
Several nearby schools and childcare facilities were also placed on a hold-in-place status but those restrictions have since been lifted.
Authorities said their preliminary investigation indicates the incidents are related and the shooting was targeted.
Police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community, though no one is in custody.
Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Bureau responded to the scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, authorities said. No additional information was immediately available.
Aurora Area Crime Stoppers is offering cash rewards up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of felony crime offenders and the capture of felony fugitives, authorities said.
