Federal prosecutors have dismissed all remaining charges against remaining members of the so-called “Broadview Six.”
Prosecutors announced the dismissal after a hearing before U.S. District Judge April Perry, who had previously dismissed felony charges in the case earlier this month.
Prosecutor Andrew Boutros admitted in court Thursday that prosecutors had made “significant errors” in the grand jury process.
It is expected grand jury transcripts will be unsealed by the end of the day Thursday, shedding more light on how the federal case came to be.
Defense attorney Chris Parente alluded to the practice of “vouching” during the grand jury hearings, effectively kicking grand jurors off the panel who disagreed with the charges. Transcripts were then redacted by prosecutors, with defense attorneys seeking for those redactions to be removed as the case moved forward.
The charges dismissed Thursday were misdemeanor counts of forcibly impeding a federal agent, which had a possible jail sentence of up to one year.
The dismissal puts an end to one of the biggest cases to come out of “Operation: Midway Blitz,” the immigration enforcement surge that targeted Chicago and its suburbs last fall.
Former Congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh and Andre Martin, a member of her staff, had been among the four defendants still facing charges in the case, which stemmed from an incident during protests outside of the Broadview ICE facility on Sept. 26, 2025.
Those two, along with 45th Ward Democratic Committeeperson Michael Rabbitt and Oak Park Trustee Brian Shaw, had still faced misdemeanor charges in the case, accused of surrounding an ICE agent’s vehicle outside of the Broadview facility. They were then accused of pushing it and causing damage.
They had faced up to a year in prison on charges of forcibly impeding a federal agent, but those charges have been dismissed with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled.
A trial date had been set for May 26, but prosecutors had been pressed to hand over unredacted grand jury transcripts multiple times, including when Perry dismissed felony charges earlier this month.
A Thursday court hearing had pertained to the transcripts, and after the closed hearing, prosecutors announced the dismissal of the remaining charges.
Federal prosecutors had defended their actions during the case, with the defendants accusing the government of pursuing a politically-motivated prosecution.
