Aurora police are investigating after discovering a body while searching for a missing woman in the western Chicago suburb.
Authorities said the body was found Monday evening in the area of North Farnsworth Avenue and Corporate Boulevard.
Police had been searching the area for 32-year-old Shafia Murad, who was last seen around 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the area of the Chicago Premium Outlets.
Officials said they initially searched the mall and surrounding area after Murad was reported missing on May 28, but as the investigation progressed and they pursued leads or reviewed surveillance footage, they determined Murad had traveled in the area where the body was found.
The discovery came around 7:30 p.m. Monday in a retention pond east of North Farnsworth Avenue. The fire department was called and first responders helped pull the body from the water.
“At this time, the individual has not been positively identified, and the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation,” police said in an update. “An autopsy is scheduled for June 3, and the Kane County Coroner’s Office will determine the official identification as well as the cause and manner of death.”
Police said an investigation remains ongoing.
