A 37-year-old Berwyn resident has been arrested and faces charges he allegedly struck and killed an Illinois Tollway worker Saturday.
According to Illinois State Police, the suspect is facing a felony count of aggravated driving under the influence involving a death after the Saturday morning collision, which occurred n the northbound lanes of the Tri-State in suburban Des Plaines.
Troopers were called to the scene after 4 a.m. after reports of a person being struck by a vehicle in the area.
A group of Tollway workers were patching potholes in the area when they were struck by a driver, according to Illinois State Police.
One of those workers, identified as 52-year-old Calvin Holley, was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Two other workers were also hospitalized with unspecified injuries, according to police.
The suspect in the case is still in police custody pending his first court appearance this week, according to authorities.
“Our equipment operator/laborers work on the front line of our 294-mile roadway system, performing duties that included maintaining safe roadway conditions and assisting drivers who were stranded or needed help. He was carrying out these duties when he tragically lost his life on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294),” Illinois Tollway said. “Roadway workers, police officers and everyday motorists are too often hurt, injured or worse because drivers are not following the Move Over Law. The Tollway reminds everyone to slow down and change lanes safely when approaching any vehicle with flashing lights on the road.”
