Turning 16 years old will soon bring a new milestone for Indiana teenagers – the ability to drive on their own right away.
Gov. Mike Braun signed legislation allowing teens to get their driver’s license on their birthday, which is earlier than the previous minimum age of 16 years and 90 days. The new law takes effect July 1.
“Getting a driver’s license is an important milestone for young Hoosiers and their families,” Braun said in a news release. “This commonsense change gives families more flexibility while maintaining the strong safety standards and training requirements that help keep Indiana roads safe.”
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles noted the requirements for obtaining a license haven’t changed. To get a driver’s license at 16, teens must:
• Pass the knowledge (written) test and hold an Indiana Learner’s Permit for 180 days
• Successful completion of a driver’s education program
• Present a signed log of supervised driving
• Pass a vision screening test
• Pass a driving test (driving tests may be completed with driver education providers)
The change was approved as part of House Enrolled Act 1200, which also allows 16-year-olds to obtain a motorcycle endorsement if they meet the requirements.
