Former President John Mahama was earlier today, January 14, 2021, at the Supreme Court in Accra, as hearing unfolds in 2020 presidential election petition.
Mr. Mahama was at the Apex court in the company of some NDC executives and lawyers.
During the hearing today, the Court granted Mr. Mahama’s motion for amendment which is seeking leave of the Supreme Court to correct a mistake in his petition against the results of the 2020 Presidential election had been granted.
Mr. Mahama’s application aimed at correcting a mistake he made in the petition after he inadvertently asked the Supreme Court to order the Electoral Commission (EC) to organise a run-off between himself and the EC instead of incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The former President’s lead counsel for the election petition, Tsatau Tsikata, moved the motion in Court today.
Mr. Tsikata, a veteran lawyer, while praying the court to grant the motion, argued that the error was obvious.
But a seven-member panel of the court presided over by the Chief Justice, Anin Yeboah and assisted by Justices Yaw Appau, Samuel Marful-Sau, Nene Amegatcher, Prof. Nii Ashie Kotey, Getrude Torkornu and Mariama Owusu, eventually granted the motion.
As a result, the former President and Flagbearer of the NDC in the December 7, 2020 presidential election, is expected to file the amended petition by 4:00pm today, January 14, 2021.
The respondents namely President Akufo-Addo and the Electoral Commission of Ghana have up to 4:00pm of Friday, January 15, 2020 to file their responses.
