Lecturers at one of Ghana’s leading tertiary institutions, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) have refused to return to the classrooms as school resumes today, January 25, 2021.
According to African Entertainment’s sources at GIMPA, the lecturers have expressed profound fears of contracting the novel coronavirus, hence their refusal to hold physical classes.
Sources say their fears stem from the fact that Nanabanyin Pratt, a Public Relations expert and lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) recently died from coronavirus.
Mr Pratt died on Sunday, January 17, 2021 from reported coronavirus complications.
Due to the lecturers refusal to return to classes, GIMPA’s management has been compelled to move lectures online.
Some students who spoke to African Entertainment on condition of anonymity said they have been given their timetables for online lectures.
Again, some students who had booked their hostel facilities on campus with the view that physical classes were about to be held, have been forced to go home.
One of the students (name withheld) who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Information Communication Technology (ICT) had booked his hostel facility and made every necessary preparations including the purchase of foodstuffs, about four days ahead of the reopening of school but has since returned home as classes cannot be held in person for now.
Sources say there is still no clear timeline as to when students will be allowed to return to physical classrooms for learning.
Ghana coronavirus confirmed cases were more than 60,000 as of January 19, 2021, with about 361 deaths linked to the virus, according to the Ghana Health Service.
