A United Kingdom (UK) World War II (WWII) who embarked on a historic walk in 2020 has died from coronavirus.
Captain Sir Thomas Moore, succeeded in raising a record £38.9 million for Britain’s NHS in 2020 to support the fight against coronavirus and was subsequently knighted.
But the same virus for which he walked for a few days to raise funds aimed at saving the lives of others, killed him at age 100.
African Entertainment understands that Captain Moore was admitted to Bedford hospital on Sunday, January 31, 2021, after being treated for pneumonia and testing positive for Covid-19 last week.
His daughters, Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira, confirmed his death in a statement on Tuesday, February 2, 2021.
In the statement, they indicated that “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore. We are so grateful that we were with him during the last hours of his life; Hannah, Benjie and Georgia by his bedside and Lucy on FaceTime.”
“We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother. We shared laughter and tears together,” they added in the statement.
“The last year of our father’s life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of. Whilst he’d been in so many hearts for just a short time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever,” it said.
“The care our father received from the NHS and carers over the last few weeks and years of his life has been extraordinary. They have been unfalteringly professional, kind and compassionate and have given us many more years with him than we ever would have imagined,” the statement pointed out.
Captain Sir Moore popularly known as ‘Captain Tom’ was born on April 30, 1920 in Keighley, United Kingdom.
