Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu, has denied seizing excavators that were being used for illegal mining activities or Galamsey during his tenure.
According to him, he only gave an order for the withdrawal of excavators from Galamsey sites nationwide.
Mr. Amewu made this known during his vetting in Parliament on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, as Minister-designate for Railways Development.
During the vetting monitored by African Entertainment, Mr. Amewu stated that based on his order, about 500 excavators were withdrawn from sites.
He noted that most of the excavators were not owned by the miners but by other organizations.
The decision to seize the excavators was a process to go through the AG’s Office, he revealed as he tried to point out that as then Lands and Natural Resources Minister, he did not have the power to seize any excavator.
Asked how he felt when he heard people saying the excavators were seized and subsequently vanished, he observed how he himself had been tagged as taking away 20 excavators for personal gain.
