Italian Prime Minister (PM), Mario Draghi, has warned of a “new wave” of Covid-19 outbreak in Italy.
As a result, schools, restaurants and shops in parts of Italy are to be shut on Monday, March 15, 2021.
Reports say from 3-5 April, 2021, Italy will experience a total shutdown.
In recent days, Italy has seen a surge in its covid-19 infections, surpassing 25,000 new confirmed cases a day.
Since the outbreak of coronavirus in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, Italy has recorded over 100,000 Covid-related deaths. Italy has also recorded a total of 3.2 million confirmed cases and its vaccination programme has been delayed as AstraZeneca announced a shortfall in the quantity of its vaccine to be supplied to the European Union.
Reports say over half of Italy is expected to see its schools, restaurants, and shops closed. Milan and Rome are to be affected, reports say.
According to reports, residents in the likely-to-be affected areas will be asked to stay home and will only be allowed to go out for work, health and other essential reasons.
PM Draghi’s Office is reported to have announced that the new restrictions would be in force until Easter and over the Easter weekend Italy would be turned into the high-risk “red zone”.
“I’m aware that today’s restrictions will have consequences on the education of your children, on the economy and on everyone’s mental health,” says Mr Draghi .
“But they’re necessary to avoid a worsening of the situation that would require even stricter measures,” he added.
