Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has engaged members of some small scale mining associations in the Ashanti Region.
The meeting took place on Wednesday evening, March 24, 2021, at the COFKANS Hotel in Obuasi.
In all, the Minister met with the Dunkwa, Fomena, Obuasi and Adansi North Small Scale Mining Associations.
According to the Minister, Government shall not give space for any illegal small scale mining popularly known as Galamsey.
He said the President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government shall continue to ensure the strict regulation of the mining sector to prevent illegal mining activities.
Mr Jinapor explained that Ghana could do small scale mining in a regulated manner.
The Minister commenced his two-day working visit to the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.
Community Mining
He indicated that the best way to go in ensuring that small scale mining is done in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly manner was Community mining.
According to him, government through the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry and the Minerals Commission will work to expand the Community Mining Scheme across the country.
The Minister prior to the meeting with the associations had visited AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine and the Adansi North Community Mining project (Adomanu) Typhoon Greenfields Development Limited.
At the Adansi North Community Mining project (Adomanu) Typhoon Greenfields Development Limited, he told African Entertainment and other media outlets that the activities of Community Miners in Adansi North clearly demonstrated that Community Mining was the way to go.
He lauded the miners for reclaiming the lands and mining in a more environmentally sustainable manner.
He seized the opportunity to encourage the miners to continue mining in a environmentally friendly manner, saying President Nana Akufo-Addo did not want to see the destruction of the environment and river bodies because of mining.
According to him, expanding Community Mining nationwide will ensure that young people get work to do in the mining sector but at the same time mine sustainably.
