A former Communications Minister of Angola, Manuel Rabelais, has been slapped with a 14-and-half years prison sentence.
He was sentenced after being found guilty of money laundering and embezzlement of a whopping $117 million, local media reports in Angola say.
He had been standing trial for months for allegedly embezzling state funds amounting to $117 million between 2016 and 2017, and using a marketing firm he headed to siphon the money.
After months of legal battle, he was found guilty on Monday, April 12, 2021 and subsequently jailed for the above mentioned offences.
Current Angolan President, Joao Lourenco, has since coming to office been embarking on anti-corruption campaigns against top politicians and businessmen who were allegedly perpetuating acts of corruption during the tenure of his predecessor, former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
It would be recalled that in 2017, a former Transport Minister of Angola, Augusto da Silva Tomas, was also jailed for 14 years for corruption.
