The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has as part of its ongoing modernization drive, commissioned an ultramodern customer service center.
The commissioning of the state-of-the-art service center was done over the weekend and forms part of the President George Weah’s administration ongoing efforts to improve electricity supply across Liberia.
African Entertainment is informed that the reconstructed customer service center has the capacity to host about 100 customers at a time.
The center has a waiting room, offices for workers of the Corporation, a well equipped call center, among others, AE has gathered.
This portal further gathered that the rehabilitation of the center was financed by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). The rehabilitation alone costs about $336,000.00. Expenditures on software acquisition and personnel training pushed the total cost of the center to about US$580,000.
Liberia is one of many poor nations around the world with low access to electricity.
A USAID study findings perused by African Entertainment showed that access to electricity in Liberia stands at about 12 percent.
Liberia’s electricity challenges are largely blamed on its protracted civil war which began in the late 1980s and ended in 2003.
The war is believed to caused wanton destruction to Liberia’s electricity sub-sector.
In its report dating back to April 16, 2020, the USAID, claimed that in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, less than 20 percent of the population has access to electricity.
Aside the challenges posed by the civil war, the issue of alleged electricity theft is also believed to be adversely affecting the electricity sector in Liberia, one of Africa’s oldest nations which gained its Independence as far back as 1847.
Back in 2018, it was discovered that residents were stealing about 60% of the power produced in Liberia, with the alleged theft resulting to annual revenue loses of about $35 million.
