Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw, has decried decades-old electricity crisis in Nigeria, blaming the development on wanton corruption.
According to her, “The corruption and impunity in the electricity Sector have gone far too long.”
She said since 1999 till date, Nigeria has lost an estimated 11 trillion naira to corruption in its electricity Sector.
Ms. Henshaw made these known in a video sighted by African Entertainment on her official Instagram page.
She expressed profound frustrations about the constant darkness in Nigeria caused by electricity crisis, saying: “I am tired of living in constant darkness”.
“Where are these monies that have been pumped into the electricity sector. Why are we not seeing gains,?” she asked.
Since the 90s, she said Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has not been able to generate more than 5,000 megawatts of electricity.
Tariffs increment
She bemoaned that electricity tariffs have been increasing over the years when there have been no increases in electricity generation, asking “why is there increase in tariffs when there is no increase in electricity generation?”
‘Generator cartels’
According to her, “I believe few people are making money from generators” that’s why they are not working to ensure the electricity supply is stable.
“There is huge corruption,” she said, adding that she could not understand why committee after committee have been set up and huge monies pumped into the electricity sector but the electricity crisis continue to persist.
Nigeria has experienced constant electricity crisis for generations. Governments after governments have failed to fix the problem despite Nigeria being an oil rich country.
Kate Henshaw is one of Nigeria’s renowned and outspoken celebrities.
