In African Entertainment’s new effort to give exposure to young musical artists from across Africa, we caught up with fast-rising Sierra Leonean rapper, YaNkie Baby, who is pushing so hard to become a known face on the African music scene.
YaNkie Baby tells African Entertainment from his base in Sierra Leone that he has already released a couple of songs and many people in his home country are beginning to feel his “vibes.”
But YaNkie Baby, real name Oliver Musa, says his dream is to be known across Africa and the world as a rapper of Sierra Leonean descent.
‘Local view’
And he says the mentality of recording labels in Sierra Leone has made him to seek for labels in other countries across Africa to pursue his craft and gain the much desired continental and global recognition.
He told African Entertainment that record labels in Sierra Leone were more focused on the domestic market, with little efforts being made to reach outside markets.
“These record labels here are just running their businesses here [Sierra Leone] and no breaking boundaries,” he told African Entertainment via telephone from Freetown.
According to him, “a lot of people that feel my vibe advise me to be on the internet, searching for record labels and all that.”
YaNkie Baby, a native of Freetown, the national capital of Sierra Leone, already has a couple of songs to his credit and has been featured by other artists locally.
‘I want the world to know me’
He says he has been rapping for five years “and I have finally determined to take it as a career.”
But he stated that he just doesn’t want to “limit” his career to Sierra.”
“I am just that rapper that wants the world to know that I can do it as well,” he says.
