A court in Abidjan, the commercial capital of Cote d’Ivoire, has slapped a television show host, Yves de M’Bella, with a 12-month suspended prison sentence for “condoning rape.”
The court also fined Yves de M’Bella 2 million CFA francs ($3,600 £2,600).
The television presenter had hosted a show in which a convicted ex-rapist Kader Traoré demonstrated on a mannequin how he sexually abused women.
As Traoré laid the dummy on the floor and pretend to rape it, De M’Bella started to laugh, moving on to assist Traoré demonstrate how he raped women.
Following the show, an estimated 50,000 people in Cote d’Ivoire signed a petition, protesting the action of the television presenter.
Meanwhile, Traoré himself has been sentenced to 24 months in jail and fined 500,000 CFA francs for the same offences.
