The City of Chicago commemorated Memorial Day with a wreath laying ceremony and parade to honor the military men and women who died serving our country.
The American flag flew high at Daley Plaza on Saturday as dozens of people gathered for a solemn wreath laying ceremony. The wreaths were placed one by one to remember our nation’s fallen heroes.
The moment weighs heavy for the family of Army Specialist Henry Mayfield Jr.
The 23-year-old from Hazel Crest was killed in a terrorist attack in Kenya back in 2020.
“We come here to celebrate him to keep his memory alive, he was an amazing kid, and we love to show the fact that he gave everything he gave everything to his country,” said his mom, Carmoneta Horton-Mayfield.
Gold Star families were joined by Mayor Brandon Johnson and other dignitaries as they reflect and pay tribute.
“Memorial Day is not simply a date on the calendar that to some can mark the beginning of summer, opening of pools, and beaches,” said Horton-Mayfield, a Gold Star mother and Illinois Survivor Outreach Services Coordinator. “It is a solemn reminder of the courage, sacrifices, and unwavering love carried by the families of those we have lost.”
After the ceremony, the city held its annual Memorial Day parade along Dearborn Street. People at the parade told NBC 5 they will never forget the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
“[It’s] very emotional I will say because I have many family members they serve,” said Juan Davis, from Grand Rapids, Michigan. “They way that I see they have given their service to the country, loyalty to the country—it makes me feel very proud for them what they do.”
Maricela Ramirez came out with her family to do their part to show support.
“My husband and son are both serving in the military currently and so very patriotic family,” she said. “We love to just come and support our Gold Star families and just everyone that’s out here today.”
As Chicagoans attending the parade reflect this weekend, they’re reminded of their freedom, the sacrifices made, and the true meaning of Memorial Day.
This year’s Grand Marshal and keynote speaker is United States Marine Corps Sergeant Major Janet Sandoval. She’s a Chicago native and graduated from Lane Tech High School. Her decorated military career spans more than 20 years.
