A ground stop was put in place at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Monday evening as a round of stormy weather brought gusty winds and hail to the region.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the ground stop was put in place for flights traveling to Chicago from a number of other U.S. airports. The stop was expected to remain in effect through at least 7 p.m.
O’Hare was also under a Ground Delay Program until 10:59 p.m. due to thunderstorms. In addition, weather led to departure delays, averaging about 60 minutes and increasing as of around 5:30 p.m.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, much of the Chicago area was at a level one, or “marginal” risk of severe weather between 6 p.m. and midnight. Some portions of the region were under a higher “slight” risk category, or a level two out of five.
