The DEA has joined the investigation into a scary incident on the Eisenhower Expressway that left one person dead and police looking into an explosion.
The windows and windshield of an SUV were seen to be shattered in the SUV, which came to rest in the outbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway on Thursday morning.
Police were called to the scene just after 10 a.m. in Westchester on the outbound side of the highway near Mannheim.
Illinois State Police were called to the scene, but ultimately called in assistance first from the Cook County Bomb and Arson Squad, then the FBI and the ATF, according to authorities.
All lanes of the roadway were closed for the investigation, and as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday remain closed down.
The DEA has now joined the investigation, erecting a white tent around the vehicle as they continue to search for evidence in the bizarre incident.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed a fatality related to the incident, but no identity was given and no cause of death has been released at this time.
In addition to all lanes of the Eisenhower, on-ramps to the highway from the Tri-State Tollway and Interstate 88 remain closed, snarling rush hour traffic in the area.
