Tik Tok and Instagram has now added Doja Cat Vegas from the Elvis biopic to their playlist for reels. The single is also the first to drop from the soundtrack for the movie.
It mixes her signature style with elements of the legendary Elvis classic “Hound Dog” for a catchy track you’ll have stuck in your head all week!
Doja Cat debuted the single during her Coachella performances over the past two weekends.
The 26-year-old announced the news on stage.
“I just made a song for the new Elvis movie directed by Baz Luhrmann, it’s called ‘Vegas,’” before the sound of Dukureh’s growly, rough interpolation of “Hound Dog” bubbles up over the song’s trap-like beat.
She also brought out gospel singer Shonka Dukureh.
Dukureh plays the role of Big Momma Thornton in the film.
Big Momma Thornton was one of Elvis Presley’s inspirations and the original creator of the song “Hound Dog,” the song that put Presley on the map.
The Elvis biopic, also stars Austin Butler as Elvis. Tom Hanks also stars as the late rock icon’s controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Along with Doja Cat Vegas, Dukureh also sings on the soundtrack.
Another artist, Yola also plays in the movie. She takes on the role of Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Tharpe and Elvis shared a lot in common. The artist inspired Presley. Each day Elvis would rush home from school in Tupelo to listen to her sing along on WELO’s daily half hour of black gospel.
According to his school friend, Billy Welch, Elvis would never miss a show.
Director Baz Luhrmann also spoke out. “We are still mixing the film, so a little late on Elvis Thursday again, but we are so near to closing out.”
It is said to open in theaters on June 24.
