Elijah Mcclain was only 23 years old when his heart stopped beating due to police interference. On the night of Aug. 24, 2019, around 10 p.m., Elijah McClain went to a convenience store near his home to buy some soft drinks. In surveillance video from the store, he can be seen wearing a ski mask. His family says he was wearing it because he had anemia, a blood condition that can make people feel cold more easily, and the mask kept him warm.
Meanwhile, Elijah Mcclain was unarmed, and not bothering anyone when police showed up. The police were tipped of by a caller describing Elijah wearing a mask and saying he looked “sketchy” but added that “he might be a good person or a bad person.” When asked, the caller told the operator that there were no weapons and that no one was in danger. The operator advised him that officers were on their way to check it out.
As officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema stopped Elijah McClain as he was heading home and informed him that he was “being suspicious,” according to police body camera video. McClain responded, “I have a right to go where I am going.”
As Elijah Mcclain was grabbed by police he asked them to let him go saying, “I am an introvert. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking,” McClain pleaded. “I’m going home… Leave me alone. You guys started to arrest me, and I was stopping my music to listen.”
The family lawyer Mari Newman spoke out saying, “There was absolutely no reason legally why the officers should have stopped him in the first place. When he said ‘I’m just going home. I’m just going home. I’m an introvert. Please respect my boundaries,’ they grabbed him. They tackled him. And they threw him to the ground.”
As police try to apprehend Elijah, he provided his name and told them that he was on his way home. During the apprehension Elijah could be heard telling police that “he could not breathe.” As police attempt to arrest Elijah they administer a drug called Ketamine for sedation.
According to Elijah’s body weight officers doubled the dose needed. The drug is an already dangerous drug. According to anesthesiologist the drug should be administered with proper equipment incase of respiratory failure. Elijah weighed a merely 140 lbs and was give 500 mg of the drug which is measurement for a 200 lbs person. Officers claimed they miscalculated the drug amount.
Elijah’s family is fighting for justice along with protestors for Black Lives Matter.
