The latest protest tagged #OccupyLekkiTollgate will reportedly hold on February 13 as a call to suspend plans to reopen the Lekki Toll Plaza.
Recall the Lagos state judicial panel set up to help victims of the tragic October 20, 2020 shooting find justice, ordered the reopening of the Toll Plaza three months after it was burnt down by rioters.
The charred remains of the Plaza have in the past month become a monument reminding citizens of the shocking event that saw men of the Nigerian Army open fire on unarmed protesters, leaving a yet to be confirmed number dead.
The panel set up by the Lagos State government on Saturday agreed to hand over management of the plaza to the LCC after months of appeal. The panel’s chairperson Justice Doris Okwuobi (rtd) argued that “LCC is the only entity that has had its hand tied, despite the huge financial loss it has suffered and not been able to carry out its business since the incident took place.”
Four members of the panel including the Youth representatives, called against the reopening of the toll gate citing that investigations had not been completed. They also cited that the LCC played a role in the diversion of evidence by refusing to submit CCTV footage.
