Exclusive: NPP 2024 Flagbearer Race: Confusion Hits Akufo-Addo’s Camp

Confusion has hit the camp of President Nana Akufo-Addo as Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, have divided over who leads NPP in 2024.

The President, sources told African Entertainment, has settled on the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, as his second choice for the role of the next presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to a source, the current Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, remains the number one choice or plan A of Mr Akufo-Addo as far as who becomes the next Flagbearer of the NPP is concerned.

But that has created confusion between the camps of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

Sources say Dr. Afriyie Akoto has already started making calls to some individuals to rally behind him for his campaign as a presidential candidate aspirant.

A source noted that Dr. Afriyie Akoto’s official title now in political circles is “President’s friend.”

Besides Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Afriyie Akoto, sources say the President and his team are making “all kinds of permutations”.

Accordingly, the overall aim of Mr Akufo-Addo and his team for the several permutations they are making, is to maintain power 2024 and beyond.

The ruling New Patriotic Party, according to its General Secretary, John Boadu, will organise its presidential election in 2022 or 2023.

“From the party’s calendar, even if we’ll elect a Flagbearer it will be somewhere around December 2022, the middle of 2023, or even the ending of 2023. We can’t allow the jostling to start now, if we do, we’ll be destroying the government, and may cost us our resolve to ensure that this NPP government transit to another NPP government after the 2024 general elections and we are not going to allow that. The party will take a decision and make sure that we don’t allow such testing waters now. If we allow this Alan-Bawumia jostling to go on, how are we going to prosecute these necessary things that strengthen the party on the ground,” John Boadu asked?

Former Minister of Railways Development, and ex-Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey, has already declared to contest for presidential candidate election of the NPP.

Hon. Ghartey is an experienced politician and longest serving Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan Constituency.

Also, Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten, is believed to seriously be lacing his boots to contest the election as well.

Already, there has been a free-for-all fight between the supporters of Alan and Dr. Bawumia on social media, prompting Mr. Boadu to issue a warning recently.
